Dearest everyone:Sorry for it taking me so long for me to get this mix out.  Just think of it like you skipped October so you could save up and have two CDs in one month. Or maybe think of it like it was just a rumor and no one thought it actually existed, but then finally someone uncovered it- like the lost city of Atlantis, or those Bigfoot guys in Palo Alto… but actually real.  The long lost October mix.1. “While You Wait for the Others” by Grizzly Bear2. “Rivers” by Sleeping States3. “Tragic Monsters” by Les Savy Fav4. “Hazy SF” by Ben Chasny5. “Fools” by The Dodos 6. “Rotten Hell” by Menomena7. “Moses of the South” by Colour Revolt8. “Polyethylene (Parts 1 & 2)” by Radiohead9. “More Than This (Roxy Music Cover)” by Division Day 10. “Palimpsest II” by Tim Hecker11. “Running, Returning” by Akron/Family12. “Broke” by Modest Mouse13. “Young & Old/Divine Longing” by Gregor Samsa

Although Grand Rapids in last 2 years has been very kind to Jessa and I, the long winters here have been cruel and unforgiving. Each february I am certain it is our last february in GR, and then by September I’m preparing to make it through another long cold winter. I go outdoors more often. I don’t talk as much or as fast. I find myself reading more new books than I can handle. Smoking more. Thinking more. So here is a playlist that sounds something like I feel this autumn. -Gabe“Then summer fades and passes and October comes.  We’ll smell smoke then, and feel an unexpected sharpness, a thrill of nervousness, swift elation, a sense of sadness and departure.” -Thomas Wolfe

Re: Hear in The Deadlights (Vol. 1)(*Get it? Its like DEER in the HEADLIGHTS, but not?)This is my mix for you…yes, YOU. Inspired by the glorious month of September, a creepy (yet endearing) photo I found of deers with glowing eyes, and a few songs that caught my ears. There is no apparent theme…just musical goodness. Some of the songs are well known, some are obvious and/or classic, and a few will (most likely) be from bands you’ve never heard of. I’m just happy to share some musical goodness with you. I hope you like it. - Lindsay
Tracklist:
Menomena - Muscle’n Flo
The Parson Redheads - Got It All
Ratatat - Seventeen Years
The Pixies - Monkey Gone to Heaven
Langhorne Slim - Restless
The Jesus & Mary Chain - Just Like Honey
Bird & Bee - Fucking Boyfriend
Le Loup - To The Stars! To The Night!
Radical Face - Welcome Home, Son
Joanna Newsom - Bridges and Balloons
Jackson Browne - These Days
Samamidon - Saro
Damien Jurado - Denton, TX
The Avett Brothers - Murder in the City
Jeremyy Enigk - World Waits
Bob Dylan - Song To Woody
Denison Witmer - I Can’t Make You Love Me

Hey shy guys n girls, how was your weekend? That’s cool. I’m typing “that’s cool” without waiting to hear back from you because weekends are, on the whole, pretty great with such regularity that I’m fairly certain you had a nice time chilling and relaxing. But correct me if I’m wrong on that assumption. Anyhoo…
We gotta talk abt a serious issue. It’s so serious I’m surprised the prezzy candidates aren’t chatting abt it on “The View.” The issue is DRM, which stands for Dumb Restrictions (on) MP3s. A few people have noticed that Jon HAVENS otherwise lovely mix was hamstrung by some lame Apple-sponsored DRM. Fuck you Stevie Jobs.
Now, I know the average shy guy/girl is heavily vested in the Apple Way-of-Life so this may come as a shock 2 your personal brand. While they do make some great products like the maccy lappytop and the jesusPhone, Apple is not very hip when it comes to MP3s. They have these weird rules abt how many times you can copy a file around or whatever, I dunno. Also I hate how I can’t plug in my jesusPhone to a friend’s lappy and grab the newest Soulwax remix of MGMT - Kids (good jam btw)
Anyhoo…
Shyness Is Nice is all about sharing and caring so we’d like to encourage you to share only DRM free MP3s.
Where can you find DRM free mp3s? Amazon’s site is pretty good but there’s others like Rhasody and Walmart too. You know you’re being a dbag abt digital rights management when fucking Walmart is doing better than your silhouetted draconian ass. Or, as an alternative, you can burn a CD from Itunes then rip it back to mp3 (this method takes effort and can make the sound quality crappier :( )

At long last, Shyness is Nice presents our only offering for the month of August: Jon Haven’s Sigh Songs. August? Close your eyes and remember the hazy days of a few weeks ago. The world was warmer, the smog was more robust and your head didn’t ache from that wayward bottle. Adios, Summer. You gave us sunburns and the new Atlas Sound record, and for that we’re saying thanks.
Jon’s cryptic tracklist is printed verbatim below:

Rob’s Mix: (un)familiar

07/08 (un)familiar - 62:36
Mix Compiled by: Rob Monroe
Illustrations by: Lisa Ventuso
Slow like molasses, listen on a long summer night’s drive…
Track Listing -
1. Beck - Everybody’s Gotta Learn Sometime
2. Rohner Segnitz - Argumentless
3. Evaangelicals - Strange Visions
4. Autolux - Future Perfect
5. The National - Santa Clara
6. Grizzly Bear - Shift (Alternate Version)
7. Jeff Buckley - The Other Woman
8. Broken Social Scene - Lover’s Spit (Radio)
9. Wilco - Panthers
10. Sufjan Stevens - Borderline
11. Arcade Fire - Cold Wind
12. My Morning Jacket - How Could I Know
13. Radiohead - 4 Minute Warning
14. Bon Iver - Wisconsin

When Dan asked me to be a part of this mix cd group I was immediately inspired. I remember walking down 14th street and instantly knowing the theme of my mix and the artists it would contain. In fact, I called Dan that moment because I couldn’t wait to share the idea with someone. He in his very smug and endearing way said something to the effect of, “Sounds cool, can’t wait..”. Unphased as I was, I walked along with iPod in hand selecting the songs one by one. The reason I came to be so excited about this idea was for the first time in a long time, I was assembling something for others to hear that was not my own musical creation. I remember in high school dubbing tapes in my room til’ the early hours of the morning to give to friends at school the next day. Designing by hand the cassete inserts and feeling like I had expressed some fleeting moment forever. With the past decade in my life coming to a close and the new digital playlist era fully taking leadership of the popular music world, we were all ultimately forced to change how we appreciate music and cope with the abandonment of the physicality of the process. Having a musical background I know how important this process can be to the artist, but being first a music fan, I know how much more important it was to me then.

With all that said I present to you “(un)familiar”. The idea behind the title was to gather many artists who I assumed would be familiar to many, but present songs that were the opposite. I gathered b-sides, demos, ep selections and just generally unfamiliar material that was excluded from the lp at the time of its making. I personally don’t think people give these excluded songs enough attention. In the making of an album a song can be cut for many reasons; lack of cohesivness with the overall product, too strong a song, or perhaps the best outcome, too personal. My intentions were to prove you could compile a large offering of these misfits and make something worth keeping on all the way through. So without further adieu, please take a long drive or in the summer night and let the slow unfamiliarty become the opposite. Enjoy.
